Making Cards Using One Sketch

Share it Sunday Blog Hop Banner

Ever wondered how you can start making cards using one sketch?  I know first hand that when we use sketches I can get so many card ideas. In fact I know that using sketches always helps me go into my creative zone in a faster..

But before we continue, today I am participating in a blog post where my fellow Stampin’ Up! demonstrators will be sharing card ideas to help you get inspired. So make sure you visit all the participating blogs, cause I know you will get lots of ideas to motivate you to craft today!

So let’s get started!

Making Card Using One Sketch!

So last week, I shared one sketch and we created lots of cards using one suite. 11 cards to be exact!

If you are interested you can check if out here.

So I wanted to share with you a few other examples of what you can do when you are working with sketches. Mainly because I know how much sketches can help you when you are making cards..

The Sketch

sketches to play

So lets first talk about the sketch.

As you can see on the image in the left, the sketch is very simple, it has a matted rectangle and a circle (or label), and a banner. Very simple sketch as you can see, which I would recommend if you are first starting with sketches.

Simple sketches are way easier to use, cause you can exchange their elements even easier, not to mention these are easier to substitute with the supplies at hand.

So if in the past you have struggle with using sketches, try using the simpler ones.. you will see how your cards look really nice even if it seems it has less layers.

After all you can be modifying the sketches by adding embellishments as you them fit in your card.  Plus it will be easier to change the sketch when it comes to position of the elements.. The layers they have the easier it will be to move parts around.

Once you have found the sketch you want to play with, then just select the crafting supplies you want to use.

In my case I wanted to use the Paper Blooms designer series paper, and pair it with the In Blooms Bundle!

Color Combination

And from the designer series paper you want to use, then just pick a color combination you want to use.

This is by far my best tip, when coming up with color combinations.. your cards will look amazing every single time as they will coordinate really well, as you can see in my cards below.

Learn how you can make cards using the same sketch      Learn how you can make cards using the same sketch

Modifying the Sketch

Now the next step is just playing with the sketch and see what would you use for each of the elements..

As you can see on my first card, I use the designer series paper a.k.a. DSP for the background and cardstock for the label (circle shape).  For the second card,  I used the designer series paper for the focal point (the circle or label) and the cardstock for the background.

This easy change in the cards made them look totally different, yet still like part of a set.. So you can see how this is super easy..

One thing you should note, is that when I use the DSP for the focal point, I try to look for an image that would look well. So in this case I made sure the circle would have the printed flower bouquet right in the middle. That way the card is pleasant to the eye.

Another thing you will see is that I used a bow for both of the cards, I call this “embellishing the labels” on the sketches.. you can add them as you please, in my case I try to use gems and ribbon to embellish the sketches.. and it always works!

One more card for inspiration…

Learn how you can make cards using the same sketch

The next card I am showing here uses the same sketch! Though in this case you can see how I modified the background layers.

In this card I shifted the layers in opposite directions, where you can see a tad more of the basic black from the background.

I have been doing this for background lately, and I truly enjoy how the two pieces look. It just give it a new different look, don’t you think?

I can tell you that playing with sketches is always fun when you are making cards!

Final Thoughts..

I know that when you use sketches we can come up with so many card ideas, that I highly recommend them to any card maker who have struggled with making their own cards..

Using sketches makes the whole crafting time even more enjoyable, because we have something to start making a card, like a map road in a way.

So I hope you give it a try at sketches, and if you do, please let me know what you thought of this.. did it help you making cards?  did you found making cards more enjoyable..  leave me a comment below and let me know..

Two Beautiful Birthday Handmade Cards You Will Want to Make!

Share it Sunday Blog Hop Banner

Do you like making and sending Birthday Handmade cards? If so, you are going to like this post. As I share with you two beautiful birthday handmade cards that you will want to make for your loved ones!

Also, please know that this post is part of a blog hop to help you get ideas and keep you inspired! so make sure you visit all participating blogs! I know you will enjoy it!

So let’s get started!

How to make Beautiful Birthday Handmade Cards

For these cards, I wanted to featured the So Much Love stamp set, which has a beautiful flower that can be colored in different techniques. However for my cards I thought of focusing in just one technique, which happens to be one of favorite ways to color. This is using alcohol markers a.k.a Stampin’ Blends!

For the sentiments I used the So Much Happy Stamp set, which is one of my favorites for birthdays as I can get a mix of fonts for the sentiments. That always catches my eye!

Birthday Handmade Card for a Friend coloring with alcohol markers

Color Combination

Once I know what stamp set to use, then I pick a paper pack or designer series paper (DSP) to use, as this always helps me in getting beautiful color combinations without too much trouble.

If you ever struggle with colors, I would suggest you do this. I promise you all your cards will look amazing when you follow the paper you want to use.

So for this cards, I picked the Playing with patterns DSP, and I decided to use the purple designs.. (no surprise here, since you know I love purple!)

I added the greens in this color combo, mainly because the flower image I have has leaves.. but as you can see the main colors are shades of purple.

3 Tips for Coloring with Alcohol Markers

Birthday Handmade Card for a Friend coloring with alcohol markers  As far as coloring, like I mentioned I decided to go with alcohol markers!

I love these markers a lot more, as I can blend the tones and you don’t get the strokes of your coloring, which is something you would notice if you use regular markers.

A few things are important to follow to get the best image when coloring with alcohol markers or stampin’ blends.

1.- Use Memento ink for your stamped image.. this is key as this is a water/dye basis ink that will not be pulled as you color with the alcohol markers. DO NOT use Stazon, as you will smear the black lines as you color, since Stazon is alcohol based ink.

2.- Add a light layer of the lighter color to the full image you wan to color – TIP – DO NOT over saturate the image with the color.

3.- Add the shadows with the darker color, and do the blending in the middle section of your image. This will help you avoid any bleeding of ink outside the lines of your image.

You can see on the video tutorial below how to color step by step in case these tips are not 100% clear, believe me, when you master these steps your images will look amazing every single time!

Sketches and Other ideas

Once I have the image colored, then it is just matter of selecting a sketch that will go perfect for my focal point, in this case I fussy cut the flower, so I can use this in pretty much any layout..

The video tutorial below, shows you exactly how to make this card, from coloring to assembling..

sketches to play     Birthday Handmade Card for a Friend coloring with alcohol markers

One thing I didn’t mention is that when I colored this flower, I also added wink of stella to the petals of the flower, this adds a beautiful shimmery look that makes your card stand out even more.

And finally, I love adding some bling, so in this case I used the Highlight Heather stampin’ blend to color some Rhinestones. This helps to have your embellishments color coordinated, when you don’t have them in the exact color you want..  You can do this with ribbon or rhinestones. Another reason to love your alcohol markers, don’t you agree?

sketches to play       Birthday Handmade Card for a Friend coloring with alcohol markers

Birthday Handmade Card for a Friend coloring with alcohol markers This second Birthday handmade card is actually using the same supplies and same technique for coloring, however I changed the layout of this card.

This card was inspired in a previous card I made using the Ornate Garden Suite. Interestingly it was another Birthday card .😁

If you are interested in learning how to make this fun fold, you can see the step by step video on this post. This video tutorial shows this fun fold using the Ornate Garden Suite, but as you can see, you can make it with any paper pack you have, like I did on this card.

So if you ever struggle with coming up with card ideas, just think of a card you have previously made and change things up.. different colors, different suites, or different techniques. I promise you, this will help you a lot!

How to make Cute Birthday Handmade Cards

Any time I want to start designing cards, I pick the paper pack and the stamp set or bundle I want to use. As I am selecting these products,  I always think on the feeling I want to have on my cards or the theme..

In this case it was Birthday cards for my friends, mainly women, and I wanted to have something soft and tender to express how much I love them.. and with this in mind, I thought the Paper Blooms patterned paper and the In Bloom bundle would go perfect for these!!!

               Paper Bloom           in Bloom Bundle

On thing to note in bundle I selected is that the dies in the “In Bloom” bundle are amazing!! these are stand alone dies, meaning that they are not cutting our the stamped images, but instead cutting beautiful flowers that have stitched marks!! These look amazing by themselves as you will see below in my cards!

The Color Combination

Once I am set on the products I want to use, I look for the color combination!  and a tip here is to look for colors in the patterned paper that you want to use! so you can see below the color combination and as you can see it goes perfect with the designer series paper (DSP) a.k.a patterned paper I selected!

And with the colors now selected, then I proceed to take cardstock and ribbons as well as inkpads in these colors, that way I am ready to play.

This is one of the areas where I feel Stampin’ Up! makes it super easy, as everything coordinated.. you can see from my cards bellow that every product coordinate beautifully..

Sketches & Other Details

Cute Birthday handmade cards using the Paper Blooms from Stampin Up!

Finally once I have all the products and colors I wan to use, then I just go and either create or find sketches online to start making my cards!

This is the part where the fun starts!! but let me share a few secrets to make it easier for you!!! – since I wanted to have flowers for my cards, I die cut a lot of flowers before anything else!!

I just selected one of the patterns in my DSP and cut as many flowers and leaves as I could. (there is a sheet that has circles in multiple colors, so that one was perfect for this!) you can see that on the video tutorial..

Once I had all the flowers and leaves, then i just pair several together, so i could see how they look and then help me see what card base color to use and how to arrange it on the layout I selected!!

You can see below all the sketches and all the cards as well as a close up of the flowers so you can see how beautiful these look.

When you follow these steps you will see it is super easy to make cute birthday handmade cards with these products!!!

A lot of times I hear from others they find it hard to come up with card ideas. They love the products but once they have them, they just don’t know what to do or where to start.

With this in mind, I thought it would be a good idea to share with you the process I use to come up with card ideas when using a suite.

So here is the process:

  1. Select a suite that you want to use.
    • If you don’t have a full suite then select a paper pack, a ribbon spool that would coordinate, as well as some gems or rhinestones and a stamp set!
  2. Pick a sheet from the paper pack you want to use
  3. Look for color combinations from the patterned paper you selected in step #2
  4. Pull cardstock in the colors you selected for your color combo
  5. Think of what you will use as your focal point
    • In my cards you will see that I wanted to highlight the stamped images as I wanted to showcase some stamping techniques, but this can be die cuts, stickers, etc.
  6. Look for sketches that will fit best your focal point
  7. Have fun putting together your cards!

You can see how easy this process is! believe me, try it out and let me know what you think.. I promise you that if you ever struggled coming up with card ideas this process will help a ton!

How to make Cheerful Birthday Cards

Hey friend, Today I am sharing with you an easy way to make cheerful birthday cards using the Zany Zebras. This set is soon becoming a favorite of mine as these little zebras are easy to color and have so much personality!  So let’s get started, shall we!!

How to make Cheerful Birthday Cards

One of the things that help me when making cards is thinking about the feeling I want them to have. In this case I wanted to have Cheerful Birthday Cards and with that in mind I thought of bright colors.

Once I have the emotion defined then it is easy to look for paper that inspire me that sentiment.

When looking for the patterned paper, the stripe pattern from the Flowers for all seasons DSP called my attention immediately, as it is bright, and cheerful.

Cheerful Birthday cards to make

The Color Combination

As usual, I picked the color combination for my cards from the designer series paper. I love doing this as a lot of the times I can get new color combinations that I would not have come up otherwise!

Honestly I would have never picked these colors on my own, however when I saw the patterned paper, I knew this was the color combo I wanted to try!

Most of the times I don’t think of red and pinks together, but it worked really well. I loved that all the colors are so bright and they shout happy at me! Don’t you think?

Card Details and Sketches

Once I have figure out the paper, the set and the color combination, I then proceed to find sketches for the cards.. I love doing this, as I can get super fun looks on my cards. Sketches are truly what sparks my imagination and creativity every single time! believe me!!

Below you will see the sketches I used with the corresponding card, so that you get an idea of what you can do when using sketches!

Handmade Card #1

Sketches to play     Cheerful Birthday cards to make

One thing that I did on all these cards was fussy cutting the zebras as well as their party hat, that way I could use them in all the cards as if they were embellishments.

Additionally for the sentiments I actually die cut the banner shape with the tasteful labels, that way I had matching stitched marks in the circle and the sentiment. I honestly think that this added a little of flair to this card.

And finally, I added ribbon and the enamel dots, which are my most favorite embellishments to add to cards. I think that just adding a bow and gems to any card will make it look amazing.

Do you have embellishments that you tend to use a lot when making cards? if so are what are your favorite embellishments? which are the ones that need to be in every card you make? Let me know in the comments below..

Handmade Card #2

Sketches to play     Cheerful Birthday cards to make

For this card, I used two sizes of circles, but you could use the same size if you want to. Just play with it and see what you like best.

Additionally, I added another pattern to the circles as you can see from the picture. If you don’t have another coordinating pattern you could always use cardstock and add texture or stamps on it, to add some interest..

Handmade Card #4

Sketches to play     Cheerful Birthday cards to make

For my third card, I just loved this sketch!! I think this one is a really cute and easy one to do and some how it calls my attention a lot more.. maybe it is the ribbon around the top layer.. I don’t know, but by far this was my favorite.

By the way if you are interested to see how to make all the cards, I have you covered my friend! I have a full video tutorial for you to see step by step how to make these cheerful birthday cards!

Cheerful Birthday cards to make  And by the way, I wanted to share with you what you can do to the inside of your cards. I did this for all my cards.

I just stamped a zebra into a piece of whisper white, I colored it and then add it to the card.

One thing to share here is that more and more I make these little inserts which are 3″ x 4 1/4″. I really love this size as it is large enough to not feel overwhelm when addressing the cards.

I have implemented these smaller inserts on my cards, as I felt in the past that having a full size ( 4″ x 5 1/4″) would make me feel like I have to write too much and sometimes I don’t have too much to say.. Once I change this size it became easier for me to send cards.

If you struggle with the same, then give it a try! I specially love this for Christmas cards for instance where I send a gazillion of cards and I know I will not be sending long written letters.

The Video Tutorial

And as promised here is the video tutorial where you can learn how to make these cheerful birthday cards cards step by step. I go over all the supplies, as well as all the measurements.

How to Make Easy Birthday Cards

One of the things I like to do when coming up with my cards, is to figure out the paper I want to use. For thee Birthday cards I knew I wanted to use the Artistry Blooms Designer Series Paper (DSP) a.k.a. patterned paper for these cards.  Mainly because this paper pack is full of bright colors, which would help to make cheerful cards.

After all we all want to have happy and cheerful cards to be sent to our loved ones on their special day. right?

Once you have selected the paper, then it is time to select the stamp set to use!! So for these cards I decided to use the Timeless Tulips bundle as you can color them in any color!! These flowers are so easy to incorporate with any color combo, so definitely this is one of the sets I use the most, as it is easy to use.

Once I have selected the paper and the stamp set, then its time to select the color combination out of the patterned paper, that way I can select the card stock to use.

The Color Combination

For this part, I suggest you go thru the paper pack, and then select the sheet that you liked the most or the one you want to play with. Doing this always helps you to focus on fewer colors and then it becomes easy to pick a color combination.

You can see below the color combination I decided to use for these cards.

The next step in this process if to select sketches and start playing with them. This is where the fun starts as you can then get your creative juices going!

Sketches & Other Details

One of the things I highly suggest when trying to make your cards is to look for simple sketches. This is because it becomes easier to incorporate the paper and the stamp set with the sketch.

Birthday Card #1

This sketch is very similar to the one I showed a couple of months ago for some Masculine Thinking of You cards. As you can see in the card I showed you in that post (card #2 sketch # 13), is that even though I used about the same sketch the cards look completely different when you compared them together. And this is what I love the most of this process. Everyone will get a different card even if they use the same sketch. So your cards continue to be unique!

If you are wondering about the two tones tulips, I encourage you to watch the video tutorial below. This is an easy technique using sponges, that I know you will enjoy trying out!

Birthday Card #2

For this card, you can see how simple the sketch is a well, however the card looks stunning and so cheerful!! I really think that using patterned paper in your cards makes a big difference. So if you are like me and have been hoarding paper forever, I challenge you to take the leap and cut some of it! Use it in your cards, and you will see the difference it makes in your cards.

Your cards will be easier to make, as the wow factor becomes from the patterned paper!! Seriously, trust me! give it a try and you will see.

Birthday Card #3

And this final card is as easy as the rest of the cards I showed you today. You can see that same as the others the sketch is easy to follow.  One thing I did not mentioned before is that when you picked the paper and the stamp set, it is important you also pick a few embellishments in the color combination that you picked.

Now, let me share with you a little secret. If you don’t have embellishments in the colors you are using, then pick a few in neutral colors and then color them with alcohol markers. In the cards from this post, I colored the Metallic Edge Ribbon with Melon Mambo, and you can see how well the bows look in the cards.
