Easy Fun Folds to make!

Have you been wanting to try to some fun folds for your cards? if so, then you are going to enjoy this post as I share with you three easy Fun Folds to make!

These are super easy to make and what is best is that you can make them for any occasion! So give it a try and have fun with them!

For these cards though I focused on Fall cards that I could use during Thanksgiving, but as I already mentioned you could customize them to any occasion you want, just change the paper and the stamp set and you are done!

Easy Fun Folds to make

The Color Combination

For these cards I used the Gilded Autumn Designer series paper, which as usual helped me select the color combination.  This is truly an easy way to get color combos without any trouble!

Plus Stampin’ Up! really makes it even easier as all their products color coordinate beautifully! so once you pick your colors you can pull the cardstock, ink pads and embellishments on these colors and start to play!

The Sketches

Once I have selected the color combination, then I go ahead and look for Sketches!

The biggest tip I can give you when selecting them is to pick sketches that are simple, as these offer the most of the possibilities. I said this, because it is easier for your to change shapes, colors, designer series paper, or textures. Believe me! Sketches can help you unlock your creativity..

Below you can see the sketches I used for my cards.

Fun Fold Card #1

One of the things I wanted to do with these cards was to incorporate the window sheets! I love them, but I almost always forget about them.. so I have been trying to use them more.. you will see another sample in a future post from another card I made using these window sheets!

If you are not familiar, Window sheets are like acetate sheets, that are sturdy enough and you can use them to do shaker cards, or in my case to make windows.

It honestly step up your cards!

Easy Fun Folds to make       Easy Fun Folds to make

The card above open like a tri fold card. On this card, I placed the window sheet in between the Early Espresso and the designer series paper.  This makes it more aesthetic from both in and out sides.

Also, Since the embellishments on the front of the card were glued to the window, I added the same label die cut, as in the front, to cover the back. This not only covers the adhesive from the embellishments, but also gives you another area for you to write to your recipient. You could add another stamped sentiment to it.

On the video tutorial at the end of this post, you can see exactly how to put this fun fold together!

Fun Fold Card #2

For the second fun fold card, I wanted to do a gate fold card! This is very easy to make, you start with a card base of 8 1/2″ x 5 1/5″ and you score it at 2 1/8″ from both ends of your card base (on the long side).

For my card, I just added a front panel that I decorated with the leaves from the stitched leaves dies.  Please note that when you are gluing the front panel, you just need to add it to one of the flaps, so that you can open your card!

Easy Fun Folds to make       Easy Fun Folds to make

For the inside I added a piece of Very Vanilla and a little strip of designer series paper to decorate it. You could also stamp the inside with a larger sentiment and some of the leaves from Beautiful Autumn set.

Specially for this type of fun fold card, it adds a lot when you embellish the inside of your card!

Fun Fold Card #3

This one is just even easier, and I call it a hinge card.  It looks like a regular card, but the front of your card is made with a window sheet! You could use any other specialty paper, like vellum or even some of the specialty designer series paper.

For these type or cards, you just need to cut your paper 1/2″ larger, to make a hinge so you can glue it down to the back of your card, so it opens like a regular card, but both panels of your card are of different materials!

Easy Fun Folds to make       Easy Fun Folds to make

If you are using a see thru material, like the window sheets, it is important that you cover both sides, so that you don’t see any adhesive when opening your card. This makes your card look great from the inside as well.

In my case, you can see that I added the mat of the front panel to cover the inside of the card.

If you like fun folds then let me suggest you two other posts to check! Remember you can customize them to any theme or occasion you want.

Easy Fall Card for a Friend

As I was mentioning above, my card today is around making card for our friends and family specially during this season of gratitude.. As thanksgiving approaches us, I think its important to take a few minutes to reflect about what we are thankful for.. and even more important this year that has been a roller coaster of emotions!

This year has been totally crazy and so I really think that it would mean a lot to send our cards to our loved ones to let them know how grateful we are for them.

So without further ado, here is my card!

Learn how to make an Easy Fall Card for a Friend

Fall Card Details

When I think of Gratitude, I immediately think of Thanksgiving and Fall, and this always leads to leaves!! are you the same?

And because of this, I knew I wanted to use the Stitched leaves dies!! these are an amazing set that help you create die cuts that can be used as embellishments, and that was the case for this card!

I honestly think that this die set makes card making super easy as I can cut out leaves in so many colors and then just play with them to create cards.. you can see other examples of cards made with these leaves on the following posts.

For this card I used the Plaid Tidings designer series paper (DSP) a.k.a. patterned paper, mainly because it has so many color combinations. This paper pack can help you make cards for lots of occasions, so I just went thru the pack and selected the sheet I wanted to use.

The Color Combination

Once I have selected the sheet of the paper pack that I want to use, then I pick the colors form there for my color combination. This is always the best way for me to pick colors, so if you ever struggle with this, then give it a try!!

You will see how this gets easier the more cards you make!!

Below you can see the color combination from the sheet of paper I selected!

Fun Fold Instructions

Learn how to make an Easy Fall Card for a Friend  You can see on the picture in the left how this card opens, so let me explain the construction of this card.. you will see how easy this is!!

You start with a card base that is 8 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ and score at 1 1/2″ and at 4 1/4″ on the long side

Fold on the 4 1/4″ mark so you will have a regular card, and then fold on the 1 1/2″ mark toward you (opposite to the first fold).

Then cut your designer series paper at 3 1/4″ x 5 1/4″ and glue the the DSP to that second fold! (see the first picture in this post to see this.

Then add a strip of copper foil that is 1/2″ x 5″ under the fold of cardstock

And then add the ribbon of your choice around the card, in my case I used the Braided Linen Thread  and finally embellish the front of the card. For my card I stamped the sentiment on to a die cut from the Celebration labels dies and then added the three leaves that I cut with the Stitched Leaves dies.

Embellishing the card

Learn how to make an Easy Fall Card for a FriendHere you can see the details on the label and the leaves I added to the card.

I cut out the larger of the leaves in Cajun Craze, the medium leave in Crushed Curry and the small leave in Pretty Peacock.

The sentiment is from the Beautiful Autumn stamp set, which I stamped in Early Espresso onto the Whisper White die cut from the Celebrations labels dies.  I used the second from the smallest to the largest of this die set.

And to finish off my card I added Wink of Stella on the leaves to have that glittery look and added randomly four Gilded gems.

Like I said this card is easy to make and I think you can recreate this one with lots of designer series paper, I am sure you have a collection of paper in your craft room ready to be used!

Three Easy Fall Cards to make!

With Fall upon us, I know we all need to have easy Fall cards to make during this season! Don’t you agree?

So with that in mind today I wanted to share with you Three easy Fall cards you can make in no time. Plus I will share with you a few tips on how to maximize your designer series paper to get more cards out of it!

Let’s get started, shall we???

Three Easy Fall Cards to Make

The cards I am showing today are all made using the the Tidings Plaid designer series paper.  And what is cool about it is that I only use one 6 x 6 sheet of paper from that pack to make all three cards.. I also coordinated these cards with some scraps I had from the Regals DSP pack. However you can easily change them for cardstock if you don’t have this paper pack.  Below the cards!

Easy Fall cards using designer series paper

As you can imagine you can made these cards in any color combination available in the pack, all three cards are very simple to change the theme, if you don’t want to make Fall cards. Just change the sentiment and the pumpkins for some other shape and your are ready to go.

The Color Combination

You are probably tired of hearing this, however, the designer series paper is how I get all my color combinations and this was not the exception. I followed the main designer series paper to pick up the colors I wanted to use for this card.

If you are ever struggling with colors, just follow this tip and I promise you, you will be golden.  No need to get all fancy with color theories and all that jazz.. you can just see your paper and pay attention to the colors you like in a pattern and go from there.. trust me you will see how easy it gets the more you do this.

Sketches and other details

As I mentioned in the intro, these Fall cards are super easy to make, and they maximize your paper, meaning you can make a lot of cards from just one sheet of 6 x 6 DSP.

In this case I used a strip of 2″ for the first card and the for the second I used what was left, the key for the third card was to die cut the rectangle from the piece that I was using on card #2 so I could use that portion on card #3.

This tip is a great one, specially is you are covering it with another element. After all no one will even notice it! And you get three cards instead of two! how cool is that!! right?

Bellow the sketches and the cards in more detail in an effort to help you see better the elements and to make it easier for you to case. I have also provided below the video tutorial for you to see step by spec how to make these cards.

A few other tips for you:

  • The pumpkin was stamped with Early Espresso on a Pumpkin Pie cardstock and then added color with the stampin’ blends a.k.a. alcohol markers. This makes it easy to add dimension to our element without too much effort.
  • The ribbon was colored using the stampin’ blends. So if you are ever thinking you don’t have the perfect ribbon for your project, think again and color with your alcohol markers. Even better, using the stampin’ blends make them color coordinate 100% with your project.

Three tips to make Easy Fun Fold Cards

One of the questions I get a lot is how to make Easy Fun Fold Cards, so today I wanted to take some time to share with you some of my tips.. you will see that these three cards are easy to make and easy to change to incorporate any paper collection you have!

So let’s get started!

How to make Three Easy Fun Fold Cards

When thinking of fun folds, we picture complex cards, and fear that these will be super hard to make. It can get a bit intimidating..

However, Fun Fold cards can be super easy and still have that “WOW” factor that we all love. Specially when we want to add a little bit of interaction in our cards, and make them even more special for the person opening one of these cards.

On the cards I am showing you below, you will see that these all look as regular cards, but it is when you open them that you see that “WOW” factor.  So here are a few tips to consider when coming up with your own fun folds.

Easy Fun Folds to try

Tips when making Fun Folds:

Here are a few of my best tips when it comes to making fun fold cards in an easy way!

1.- Think of alternative ways you can fold the card base

Whether you have an 8 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ or an 11″ x 4 1/4″ card base, you know that the card front should end up measuring 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″.  So think of different combinations of folds that can result in this final measurement.

A few examples of this could be:

  • Card base 8 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ – Regular fold is at 4 1/4″
    • Score at 2 1/8″ and at 6 3/8″ and you will get a gate fold card
  • Card base 11″ x 4 1/4″ – Regular fold is at 5 1/2″
    • Score at 3″ and at 8 1/2″ –  this is the type I made in card #1 (below)

Click here to see another example of Fun Fold on this post where you play with the measurements of the card base.

Easy Fun Folds to try    Easy Fun Folds to try   Easy Fun Folds to try

2.- Fold in Half Twice the card base

This is by far one of my favorite ways to make Fun Folds! Similar to the tip above, you can do this with an 8 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ or an 11″ x 4 1/4″ card base.

This is the easiest and you don’t have to remember scoring marks, though you can make score marks if you want. You can see that I used this method on card #2.

One thing to consider with this type of fun fold is that you could use the inside of your card, so always put a smaller piece in the inside than the piece you are adding to the front to decorate.  Also always glue the inside first and then glue the layer on the top, that way you ensure you cover the inside of your card.

If you want the measurements to score, here you go:

  • Card base 8 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ – Regular fold is at 4 1/4″
    • Score at 2 1/8″ and at 4 1/4″
  • Card base 11″ x 4 1/4″ – Regular fold is at 5 1/2″
    • Score at 2 3/4″ and at 5 1/2″ –  this is the type I made in card #2 (below)

Click here to see other examples of this type of fun fold using a different suite.

Easy Fun Folds to try   Easy Fun Folds to try   Easy Fun Folds to try

3.- See your sketch and think which piece can be added as a fold

This tip is a bit more advanced, but not hard at all, you just need to see which piece in a sketch can be added as the fold.

To help you pick which piece in a sketch can be added as a fold, think of the layer that is positioned towards the edge or the borders of your card. This will allow you to add a tab to make the fun fold.

Your card base in this case is a quarter of a sheet (4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″) and when you add the piece you selected from your sketch, you cut it 1/2″ larger (on the side that goes toward the edge) to make a tab that you can fold and glue it to the front. To cover this tab you glue another cardstock or a piece of designer series paper so the tab is in between the card base and the DSP or second layer of cardstock.

Similar to the card above make sure that you glue the inside of your card before and then glue the top layer, to ensure you cover the inside of your card.

You can see exactly what I mean in the video tutorial as this is how I made card #3 (below)

The Video Tutorial

And as usual, you can watch the video tutorial below where I show step by step how to make these cards. I think that the video will clarify a lot more what I explain above.. I am a firm believer that a visual always helps.. If you have any questions by all means leave me a comment and I will answer any question you might have regarding these fun fold cards!

Finally, I have a question for you. If you could have a private conversation with me, what two questions would you like to ask me? – I’m really serious – go ahead and send me an email me at allie@creatingwithallie.com and tell me your question. What do you need help with? – Until next week..

As you can see from the pictures, the main design or layout of my card is showcasing the designer series paper. One thing that I love about this layout is that you can use both sides of the same sheet of paper! Usually both sides are so beautiful that is hard to decide which side to use. Well this layout fixes that problem and you get to use both sides!! is that not cool?? I thought so too!

The leaves are die cut with the coordinating Nature’s Roots framelits from this suite. The cool thing about this set is that not only does it have the framelits, but it also has some embossing dies! in this particular set, it contains three embossing leaves!

Did you see the little leaves trinkets? Are these not gorgeous?? I love how well this trinket embellish the card!! and of course I had to add a bow made with the Nature’s Twine that coordinates well with this suite! I love the color coordination among ink pads, designer series paper, cardstock, embellishments! it makes it so easy to create cards or any other paper crafting project that you have in mind.
